Week 5 - Viral

So I finally went viral. I started seeing a bunch of people post videos with the Area Codes song byKali and had a silly little idea. I thought it would be something quick and easy to film and edit (and it was) but I initially questioned whether or not it was funny enough or good enough to post. I had also been seeing other people’s videos for a couple days and thought I was a little late to the party. I posted on Tuesday and I had some initial success! More views and likes than I ever had on any of my previous videos. I had 3K views, some fun comments and likes and I was ecstatic. I couldn’t believe this quick little, spur of the moment video had gained so much attention. The next couple of days went by with a smattering of follows, views and likes.

Saturday I woke up to a lot of activity. I told my husband, I think something’s going on, I have more followers, views, and likes all of sudden, more than I’ve had the last couple of days. We packed up and went to New Orleans for a little field trip and when I came home, I had 32K views. I was beside myself. I was in disbelief. Then everybody kept asking for me to make it sound. Which I would’ve loved to do if only I knew how.

I spent the next hour trying to figure out how to make it work. I tried reaching out to people who I knew had TikTok accounts but no one was available. With no way to retroactively make the video I already posted a “sound”, it became clear I was going to have to go ahead and re-upload it. Sunday I watched the view count run even higher. I tried to like and engage with everyone’s comments. Every time I opened the app, I had more notifications. I was overwhelmed.

As of publication of this blog post, I have 219K views. What in the full world?

And what can I possibly do next? Struggling a little bit with decision paralysis or what to make and post next. How can I anything I post next possibly compete with that?

In other news, I went to a Cher Tribute Concert to celebrate opening night of Pride Month! I sang along and had the best time making friends with strangers. I celebrated a family birthday at Top Golf and spent a day in New Orleans going all kinds of places including the Van Gogh Experience! But we can talk more about that next week!
